The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office is staffed with a Victim Advocate tasked with the responsibility of providing assistance to direct and indirect victims of crime. Services offered to victims includes referrals for counseling or support groups, court and forensic interview accompaniment, assistance with shelter referrals and other housing resources, guidance through the criminal justice process, and applications for South Carolina Crime Victims' Compensation Fund.

A victim of a crime has these rights:

  • The right to be treated with fairness and with respect for the victim's dignity and privacy and informed of a victim's constitutional rights.
  • The right to be reasonably informed when the accused or convicted person is arrested, released from custody or escaped.
  • The right to be informed of and present at all criminal proceedings which are dispositive of the charges where the defendant has the right to be present.
  • The right to be allowed to submit either a written or oral statement at all hearings affecting bond or bail.
  • The right to be reasonably protected from the accused or persons on his behalf throughout the criminal justice proceedings.
  • The right to confer with the prosecution, after the crime against the victim has been charged, before the trial or before any disposition and informed of any disposition.
  • The right to have reasonable access after the conclusion of the criminal investigation to all documents relating to the crime against the victim before the trial.
  • The right to receive prompt and full restitution from the convicted person or persons.
  • The right to be informed of any proceeding when any post-conviction action or hearing and be present at any hearing.
  • The right to a reasonable disposition and prompt and final conclusion of the case.
